Setup of an OFX DirectConnect User

AqBanking Setup Dialog

Launch the AqBanking setup dialog. In GnuCash you find it in the main menu under Tools/Online Banking Setup. The second page of that assistant has a button showing Start AqBanking Wizard".

You should see the following dialog:

Of course your list of users will be different, in most cases it will be empty at first. Click the Create User button.

New User Wizard

The new user dialog looks like this:

Click the Next button.

Select the Banking Protocol

This dialog allows for selection of the banking protocol. In this case we want to create a user for OFX DirectConnect, so we have to check the appropriate entry and click next.

OFX DirectConnect Setup Wizard

This dialog should show up:

Click Next to continue.

Bank Information

This dialog page lets you enter important bank information. If you don't have this information you could try clicking the Select button. That will allow you to pick the bank from a list of known banks. If you can't find your bank there you could try one of the following links:

Clicking the Select button will open a dialog which uses www.ofxhome.com to lookup bank information. While you are typing in the Bank Name field the list will be updated to only show banks whose name matches your input.

If you couldn't find the needed information in the dialog but managed to find the information somewhere else we strongly encourage you to enter this information at www.ofxhome.com so that the next user won't have to search for it.

User Information

This page lets you enter the user name and user id. The user name is your name as it is registered with your bank.

From GnuCash wiki about the User ID:

User id is the login name the bank associates with your account. If you have web access to your data, this ID is usually the same one you use to login to the bank/credit card web site. Some banks use your SSN as the default User ID, particularly if the bank thinks you are using Quicken to connect. The User ID field is the one AqBanking sends as part of its OFX login request.

Application Emulation

Application Identification and Version

For unknown reasons some bank servers rely on the correct application identification and version to be reported upon login. Basically there are two kinds of applications: Intuit Quicken and Microsoft Money. Some banks only support either of them, and only up to a specific version.

If your bank tells you that they only support a specific application and version thereof you need to adjust the settings for the emulated application.

Choosing an application from the drop down list will automatically preset the fields for Application Id and Application version.

Header Version

Normally you don't have to change the field Header Version, but there are reports of some banks only allowing header version 103 instead of the standard 102.

Finish/Retrieve Account List

Basically, the user setup is finished now. However, to retrieve account statements we need to setup the accounts to be managed via OFX DirectConnect. Many banks help you with this by providing means to automatically download the list of accounts. I you click the Retrieve Account List button an apropriate request will be submitted to the bank.

The following screenshot shows a successfull request. Please note the lines saying Adding account xyz. If you find similar lines in you request window then the request was sucessfull. If not then this window will in many cases also include some hints (especially the answers from the server, possibly with error codes).
